About the City

Calabria is a region in southern Italy. It comprises the so-called toe of the Italian Peninsula and has a coastline of about 800km. Olives, citrus fruits, potatoes and figs are mainly grown there.

Calabria was called "Bruttium" in earlier times. The modern name of Calabria was not given to the region until the Middle Ages. The Greeks, the Romans and the Normans already appreciated the wonderful landscape and settled down. On your stay in Calabria you will discover many archaeological finds dating back to antique times: sculptures, columns and parts from temples can give you an idea of what life was like then.

The Sprachcaffe language school is in Santa Domenica inside an idyllic orange tree orchard. The distance between the beach and the school is only a few hundred metres. Santa Domenica is situated near Tropea, the best known town in Calabria. Small shops, inviting cafes and restaurants characterize the small town Tropea, which has a beautiful cathedral built in the 12th century.

You can almost be sure to have good weather in Calabria. The area is ideal for surfing, sailing and diving. The rocky landscape of the Capo Vaticano provides you with an amazing view on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Sometimes you can even see as far as Sicily and the island Stromboli with its active volcano.

You will have the peace and and relaxation you need to learn Italian in the unaffected landscape of Calabria. If you would like to make an excursion, there are two bigger towns that are not too far away: Consenza and Reggio di Calabria.
